The most asked question we get is “how do I cope with the distance?”Although I’ve been in a LDR for years, it’s still pretty difficult to deal with being apart…
Here are some tips on how to cope with the distance.
1. Keep yourself busy.
This is probably the most important tip we can give you. The worst thing you can do is sit there and think about how much you miss your partner. If you keep yourself busy, then you won’t feel as down! Yes, it’ll be hard to find the motivation to leave your room, but if you don’t, you’ll only make the time apart harder.
2. Create a routine.
This goes hand in hand with the tip above – come up with a daily or weekly routine. For example, pick one day of the week where you’ll go to your favorite restaurant, see a friend, or even something as simple as going to a coffee shop for a morning coffee. This gives you something to look forward to everyday, resulting in keeping you happy!
3. Plan online dates.
Yes, it’s a little cheesy, but who doesn’t love romance!? This will take some planning – talk it over with your partner. Come up with a day where you will both have time for an online date. You can both plan to eat at the same time, watch a movie together on Netflix, or even just sit there and talk. There are endless date ideas – just think of what you both love and the ideas will come to you!
4. Avoid excessive communication.
Long story short, if you’re talking 24/7, eventually you’ll run out of things to say. On top of that (as scary as it sounds), you might just get bored of your partner. If you’re too involved with their every move, things will start to get boring and you might lose interest or vice versa.
5. Don’t be afraid to get a little frisky.
Some of you might feel uncomfortable with this tip. It’s not mandatory, but it definitely helps to keep the relationship alive. Some of the things you can do is try on some sexy clothes for your partner over Skype, or have a ‘late night’ call (if you know what we mean…) – Whatever you’re most comfortable with. It’s a good feeling to get your partner excited!
6. Be honest.
If your partner is doing something that you’re uncomfortable with (for example, going out clubbing every night, or hanging with a girl or boy that they have history with) you need to be honest and tell them how you feel. If you bottle up your emotions, one day you’ll pop and they’ll all come out at once, resulting in a possible fight. You and your partner need to set boundaries of what you’re both okay with.
7. Plan your next visit.
One of the best feelings is knowing the next time you’ll be reunited with your partner. As difficult it can be, try and figure out the next time you will see each other again. Once you do, you can create a countdown and continue to get excited everyday as it gets closer!
8. Spend time with friends and family.
As suggested, you need to keep yourself busy. The best way to do so is to spend time with your friends and family!
9. Stay positive.
Not that this needs much of an explanation, but don’t be a negative Nancy! If you’re constantly thinking negative, you’re bound to get more and more down. Put out good energy and think of the positives that come out of your relationship, rather than the negatives. (Thank us later!)
Throughout the day, keep updated with your partner… Don’t overdo it! A few times a day, video-chat with your partner and remind them of how much you love them!
We can’t guarantee that being apart will be easy, but as long as you are both in it for the long run, you can get through the distance!
